Advocacy & Outreach
Advocacy has always been an important part of my life.
As a person with Down syndrome, I believe everyone deserves the opportunity to live, work, dream, and be treated with respect. Through Raquel Beautiful, speaking engagements, community involvement, social media, and advocacy efforts, I hope to help create a world where everyone feels valued, included, and empowered.
I am passionate about raising awareness, encouraging acceptance, and helping others recognize the beauty and abilities in every person.
Below are some of the advocacy efforts and causes that have been important to me throughout my journey.
Marriage Penalty Advocacy
"Originally written before my trip to Washington, D.C."
“Did you know that people with Down Syndrome that get married may lose up to 25% of their benefits? It’s called the Marriage Penalty and I’m asking congress to pass the Eliminating Marriage Penalty in SSI Act (EMPSA) (HR7055) when I go to DC in March!
SSI is Supplemental Security Income. It is a benefit for people with Down syndrome (and other disabilities) that only kicks in if we can’t get meaningful employment. There is an asset limit and an income limit in order to receive SSI and it’s low. All of the limits are lowered if someone receing SSI gets married!
I want to get married and live a fulfilling life. For me, I hope that my future doesn’t include SSI benefits but for so many with Down syndrome it may. Tell congress that there shouldn’t ever be a penalty or loss of benefits for anyone getting married. Call your congressman or senator today to tell them to support this bill and eliminate the marriage penalty! #Loveislove Support my journey on instagram and tiktok!”
